Social Justice Commission Minutes
Present: Niki Krob, Randy Jaeger, Debbie Carrico, Linda Noll, Sue Schettler
Opening Prayer: led by Niki Krob
Minutes of September 12, 2008 meeting-approved Minutes of October 6, 2008 meeting-approved
Old Business: Adoption Forum: The adoption forum will be held at 11:30 am (following Sunday mass) on November 23, 2008. Donuts and daycare will be provided for the participants. Niki and Jake Krob will facilitate the discussion on adoption and they hope to have several other couples from our parish to share their adoption experiences as well. Parishioners contemplating adoption are encouraged to attend. Several reminders have announced the forum in the bulletin.
Kids Against Hunger of Linn County: After discussion, it has been decided not to pursue participation with Kids Against Hunger this year. The Mount Vernon high school students already do an activity in May for Kids Against Hunger. Also, with the church holding a capital campaign currently, it is felt that timing for fundraising to support the Kids against Hunger project would not be ideal.
Operation Rice Bowl: Linda Noll will gather information on 2009 Operation Rice Bowl activities. Linda will also open dialogue with Mary Kay Brandt, the youth minister, to see if we can combine efforts with the high school youth as an educational and service project for the rice tasting event.

Parish Mission Meeting: Terri and Debbie reported on the parish meetings held April 5/6. At the meeting, they gave some history on the pastoral council goal to establish a mission trip. They explained the research done by the social justice commission on some mission trip programs. They talked about parish-wide fundraising that would be required to support a mission trip. Interest sheets were tabulated by Terri from the attendees at the meeting pertaining to desired dates, length of trip, etc. The attendees expressed their personal goals to extend help to others beyond the immediate community. Linda brought two booklets with lists of mission trip programs that Sue Schettler was able to get from another parish. The commission will await further instructions from pastoral council.
Spring Newsletter: No date has been established for the next publication.
Environmental Speaker: No speaker was secured. It was decided to postpone having a speaker come to St. John until next year, when it could be well publicized.
Environmental Display: Linda will make an Earth Day display for April 19/20, to include such things as reusable bags and energy efficient light bulbs. Hal will place an Earth Day flyer in the bulletin.

Old Business:
Operation Rice Bowl: Sue stated that Rice bowls will be collected on Holy Thursday. Along with money, we will be collecting food for Southeast Linn. We will need volunteers to bag coins & cash for drop off at Mt. Vernon Bank. After Easter, Linda would like a follow-up with Katie to assess if the guides we purchased for every classroom were effective. She would like this kept on the agenda so we can discuss this with them. Receipts from the rice bowl tasting should be given to Loraine so you can be reimbursed & so we can have an accounting of total cost.
Mission Meeting: Originally scheduled for March 29, has been rescheduled for the weekend of April 5 & 6. Debbie & Terri will lead this. Debbie has prepared a questionnaire to hand out at the meeting. We decided to also have these at the back of the church in case someone was interested, but couldn’t attend the meeting. They will also go out as a flyer in the bulletin March 29 & 30.
Spring Newsletter: Debbie passed out a sample newsletter she had written. We’ll need to check with Sue when this is being published in case we could include results from the mission survey.
New Business:
Budget Review: We are now about half way thru our $1200.00 budget. We need to add around $72.00 for the Cornellian ad. Linda is going to talk to Matt Burke & get a clarification on postage concerning this.
Environmental Speaker: We’d like to do this in May. Debbie will contact Alliant Energy for this. If possible, we’ll include a flyer in the bulletin for April 19th & 20.
Legislative Issues: Hal will continue to post any emails and newsletters he receives.
Parish Council: Linda reports they will meet in April to set goals for each commission rather than in August, thereby enabling the commissions more time to enact these recommendations.
Next Meeting: April 8th Prayer: Niki Minutes: Linda

Present: Debbie Carrico, Sue Schettler, Hal Dendurent, Randy Jaeger, Jean Eash, Linda Noll
Opening Prayer: led by Jean Eash
Minutes of January 8, 2007: approved
Old Business: Poverty Awareness: Hal mentioned the poverty awareness flyer appeared in the January 12/13 bulletin, the cart in the entry will be there through November, and besides food they are in need of men’s clothing. There was a question about more notice given to the parishioners about the cart, it was decided that a quarterly bulletin reminder, a newsletter write up, and occasional announcement before mass would help. Hal will prepare a statement for the bulletin and send to Sue and Loraine.
Lenten Magnets: These were to be given out on Ash Wednesday, but since mass was cancelled there are now located within the Operation Rice Bowl display for parishioners to pick up (as an offering), the magnets were also handed out at mass. Sue will make an announcement at the next mass.
Mission Trip Update: Debbie mentioned the presentation of Young Neighbors in Action.com to the pastoral council with the pros as it is organized, structured, and catholic. The cons were it’s only for 20 or 25 people and driven more for youth. The pastoral council’s response (recommendation) from the January 28, 2008 meeting– hold parish wide meeting(s) to get age range and interests of possible participants, also see if a leader will emerge. Some of the pastoral council did agree that our recommendation might seemed rushed to put something together for mid-summer, at least one member thought we should do a mission this summer no matter how small – “just light the candle and watch it grow”. Sue mentioned that Katie spoke with a friend at YNiA and they suggest a 5 youth to 1 adult ratio, these trips are more youth (learning and activities) than for adults. Sue also mentioned that Sue Davidson, who works at Mt Mercy with students, will get a mission list to Father Jim. Sue D also mentioned that YNiA is for youths and some missions have age restrictions. We decided on the following: Parish meetings will be March 29/30 after masses (Linda will email Sue / Loraine to place on the monthly calendar), Debbie will put together a rough draft questionnaire for the parish meeting, which we will discuss and fine tune in our March meeting, and Hal volunteered to work on the flyer after our March meeting, this flyer will be distributed March 15/16.
Operation Rice Bowl: Everyone complimented those who put the rice bowl display together, and felt the calendar was a good compliment to the little black book that was handed out. The Rice Bowl Tasting scheduled for March 2 has been moved to February 24, due to conflicts with the over 60 dinner and the outlook for the remainder of March. The decisions made are as follows: Debbie will notify Terri, Niki, and Mark of the date change, if Mark or Niki is unavailable that weekend then Hal, Randy, and Sue all offered to make their rice (Debbie will coordinate if necessary). Make enough for 24 servings and Linda has some small cups for sampling. Publicize – Sue and Loraine will work on a flyer for the bulletin, Sue will make an announcement at mass, and Hal will publish to the web site. Setup – 10:15 am on Sunday, February 24, after the Religious Education classes have completed we will setup tables, five stations for each type of rice (India, Mali, Cameroon, Haiti, and Guatemala), a projector and laptop for the virtual tour cd, and Debbie will bring a stereo to play music from the five countries. Debbie will speak with Katie to assist us with setting up the projector. Please bring any decorations, items, music cds, etc from these countries if you have them (please let Linda know if you have anything). Hal will make/hang posters of what people in other areas eat and spend on eating. Others – water is the only drink to be served. Please keep track of any expenses so you can be reimbursed, we’ll take pictures of the event and place in the newsletter along with a write up of this event and future events.
New Business: Social Justice Information for Spring Newsletter: The next newsletter will be after Easter, Sue has not set a date yet. (See Operation Rice Bowl - Others for what we have planned for the next newsletter.)
Legislative Issue(s): Hal will post the latest Iowa Catholic Conference Newletter he received to the bulletin board. There were many issues discussed in this newsletter.
Others: Linda will get budget numbers from Loraine for the next meeting ($ spent and $ available). Linda passed along a pro life speaker email to others that she received. Debbie decided that the commission is very busy at this time and will look at another time.
Next Meeting: March 4, 2008. Prayer: Hal Recording Secretary: Jean Eash Respectfully submitted by Randy Jaeger

Opening Prayer: led by Niki Krob
Minutes of December 4, 2007: approved
Old Business: Mission Trip: There was a discussion of whether the Archdiocese recommends establishing a sister parish first or gave suggestions on how to establish a sister parish. Information was shared on results of research conducted by members on various mission trip opportunities. It was decided that each member should check the following websites: youngneighbors.org; shorttermmissions.com; groupworkcamps.com. Members are to pick the mission trip organization that they feel has the best potential for St. John parish to work with for a possible mission trip in June or July of 2008. Members are to email co-chairpersons Terri Ludwig and Debbie Carrico by January 13, 2008 with their vote. Terri and Debbie will tabulate the results, report it to Sue Schettler and social justice commission members and be prepared to make a recommendation to the pastoral council for the January 28, 2008 meeting.
Birthright Ad: Debbie Carrico reported that an ad has already been placed for April in the Cornellian. Further research will be conducted to find out how much it would cost to place an ad on a bi-monthly basis during the 2008/2009 Cornell school year.
Operation Rice Bowl: Linda passed out recipes for the five featured countries for the Rice Bowl Tasting scheduled for March 2. Linda has India, Niki has Mali, Jean has Cameroon, Debbie has Haiti and Mark has the recipe for Guatemala. Linda will coordinate the Pre-Lenten Operation Rice Bowl display/activity and report back to members if help is needed with set-up, etc.
Poverty Awareness Month: Hal has a poverty awareness flyer ready for insertion in the January 12/13 bulletin. Jean had the local poverty display in the church foyer Jan. 5/6. Debbie and Terri will do Jan. 12/13. Hal and Mark will do Jan. 19/20 and Linda and Niki will do Jan. 26/27.
Kids Against Hunger of Linn County: It was decided to table discussion on whether or not to get involved with the organization until yearly planning is done in May. Terri will send Joe O’Leary a thank you for his presentation.
New Business: tabled due to the lengthy meeting time.
Next Meeting: February 5, 2008. Jean Eash will lead the prayer and Randy Jaeger will be recording secretary. Respectfully submitted by Linda Noll
