Spiritual Life and Liturgy Commission
Spiritual Life & Liturgy Commission agenda / minutes
At Home with the Word : Vicky read the Gospel reading for February 8 out of “At Home with the Word”. We discussed the reading and Sue explained that the recent readings were known as “cure stories” where there is a sense of “rising” and healing. She also pointed out that the miracles Jesus performed were to show glory to God and not to show that Jesus was God.
Review of : Roe vs. Wade prayer opportunity: There was some attendance intermittently throughout. It was felt that even though there was not a strong showing of people that it was still important that those who wished to had an opportunity to come and pray. Sue had also used the talents of both Fr. John and Fr. Rod by asking them to make an effort to talk about abortion during their homilies. Also, Sue was able to write an insert that was included in the bulletin for all to read and reflect on.
New members “gift bags”update: We were in need of a source for wine to include in our usual gift bags. Brian had followed up on a suggestion from an earlier meeting and found out that Julie Meyer, a member of St Isidore , and co-owner of Deja Vine Vineyards and Winery near Springville would offer their wine at a cost of $7.00 a bottle (which normally sells for $9.95 a bottle). The commission members agreed to buy the wine through them.
The commission members had a list of the most recently added new members and names were assigned. Michelle will have the bread baked and stored in the upstairs kitchen freezer for the next delivery effort ( plan to pick up on the weekend of Feb 14 /15). Char agreed to get the wine needed and will put the gift bags in her room for members to pick up that weekend.
FOCA follow-up (Char ): Char brought to our attention the renewed push of the FOCA (Freedom Of Choice Act) where legislation is being drafted that would help enforce a law for abortion. Supposedly President Obama has agreed to sign the bill if it comes across his desk. There has been ,as a part of this movement , a push by catholics to send postcards to legislators stating that we are opposed to this direction . Charley suggested that we make sure information about what is going on is provided to everyone before putting out postcards. Our members on the commission agreed that getting information out to the parishioners may be the first step we take. Sue mentioned this is already being reviewed by the Social Justice commission and Sue will take our thoughts back to them so that both groups involved have agreement in how to proceed on this matter. Sue will consider writing something about this as well and have it put in a Sunday bulletin.
Music ministry update: There has been some people questioning why we have the new hymnals and if they are being used. Char assured the commission that they have been used and will be used even more in the future. It had been suggested by a commission member to use a color code for the numbers on the hymn board to help indicate which hymnal to look in since he had noticed some confusion by parishioners during the masses when both books had been used. Char plans to use this suggestion and have a brief explanation announced.

Brian asked as to whether this mass would be a regularly scheduled one by Loraine. Sue said to go ahead and email Loraine so that she does plan it in as though it was like a Sunday 10:30 mass.

Sue then presented to the commission different ideas on what could be done during Lent. After some discussion it was decided to offer a series of nights where the Gospel of Mark will be looked at more closely. Sue will act as a facilitator and plans to offer this from 7:30 to 9:00 on March 4th ,11th, & 18th. (She might consider doing this on Sunday afternoons at St Isidore as well).
Appreciation reception : possible dates?? Brian will check with Loraine about April 25th or 26 to see if anything is going on that would be in conflict.
Miscellaneous: Michelle said the Environment commission was not planning on fresh flowers for the Easter weekend and throughout the season of Easter. It is very hard to maintain them was the main reason given because it is very labor intensive and it also takes up a good portion of their budget. Our commission members would like them to reconsider and would like to find ways that allow at least some part of this “tradition” to continue. Hopefully ways can found to make the process easier for them and perhaps find others willing to assist.
